VPN Essentials

What is a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks are the best way to stay anonymous online and secure your web traffic. When you use a VPN, your data connection is encrypted, so ISPs, governments, NSA spies, and other third parties cannot see which websites you visit, what you download, or whether you use services such as Skype, mobile banking, or a P2P application. VPN’s protect your privacy and prevent others from monitoring and controlling your online communications and browsing activity. Your location stays private and you can switch freely between multiple global VPN server locations.

Most people have become complacent with the idea of our data being routed via Wi-Fi. We’ve stopped thinking about safe or secure the data is because we’re willing to accept the inherently unsafe nature of free Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks, for example, are commonplace and offer great convenience, but they are also excellent avenues for attackers looking to skim your personal information. When even your ISP can sell your browsing history, it’s past time to be concerned about who’s looking at your data. Who needs a VPN? Everyone does.

In the simplest terms, a VPN is used to create a secure, encrypted connection which can be thought of as a tunnel between your computer and a server operated by the VPN service. All traffic passes through his protected tunnel, and no one – not even your ISP – can see your traffic until it exits the tunnel from the VPN server and enters the public internet. If only connecting to sites with secured HTTPS, your data will continue to be encrypted even after it leaves the VPN.

Of course, it would be misleading to claim that any security product is a magic bullet. VPN services, while tremendously helpful, are not foolproof. Much like in the physical world, a determined adversary can almost always breach your defenses in one way or another. No VPN or antivirus protection can help if you unwisely download ransomware by visiting obscure websites or unwittingly give up your personal info by falling victim to phishing attacks or clicking where you ought not.

When choosing a VPN service there are many options. Generally, you get what you pay for. We at CCSI prefer NordVPN. Their servers protect your IP address and hide your true location.
